The Historical Voices Of Opera - 1189 Words

The Historical Voices of Opera: From 1500 century to new Milieumn For over thousands of years, Opera has become one of the greatest musical forms. By early 1600’s, Opera has made a major expansion all over Europe. Many singers were very skillful and challenged of any vocal genre. Also, by this time the audience didn’t just come and see actors/actress play theatrical roles, they wanted to hear the sweet sound of the leading voices. Mostly, the high vocal range parts stole the show. Between 1590 to 1900, the Castrati (male sopranos) played the leading roles as the heroines, hero and villains, but it will take decades for women to arise from the religious and political views which caused restriction on all opera houses to ban all women to participate on stage. Like women, soon the rise for the castrate singers will decline and restrictions to participate on stage will come into effect. There are four similarities between both sexes that causes a rise and fall effect in the operatic form. First similarity is the history of the ope ra. According to John Brister, before the existence of opera, each nationality has used boys, falsettos, or eunuchs as singers to entertain and worship. Even though their voices admired by a historical point of view, the falsetto and the eunuch didn’t have appropriate signature or sound to continue. Eventually, the Spanish and Roman church used castrati’s in 1577-1578. They carried a lighter tone similar to a woman’s voice. Green technology Free Essays

Green Technology: Past, Present and Now Sheilamarie Luzader INF103: Computer Literacy Edward Bakker August 5, 2013 What is green technology? â€Å"Green Technology is the development and application of products, equipment and systems used to conserve the natural environment and resources, which minimizes and reduces the negative impact of human activities. † (kettha. gov/. We will write a custom essay sample on Green technology or any similar topic only for you Order Now my/en/content/defintion-greentechnology) Green technology is extremely important for the planet and us, as human beings. Green technology has given people the opportunity overcome the reaping of natural resources and to build p the environment that the human race is consistently tearing down and damaging. Everything has a cause and reaction. Because the human race is exhausting the natural resources that the earth is providing, we are becoming reliant on something that is not going to last forever. Green technology gives the opinion to find alternatives that will be more environmentally sound and will improve life itself. Within this paper, I will cover green technologies history, what green technology is doing during the present day and what is to come in green technology and what you can do to make an impact. Many people fail to realize that green technology has been around for a very long time. Although, people in that time did not realize that they were being environmentally friendly. They were simply exploring ways to meet their needs. Many things helped pave the way for Green technology and simply then a better way of doing things and a way to live better from forms of solar power, windmills, to the power of steam, and even electric cars. The power of the sun has been used probably since the beginning of time. In 1839, Alexandre Edmond Becquered discovered a photovoltaic effect which is the process of electricity generated from the unlight. Over a hundred years later another major breakthrough comes from Calvin Fuller, Gerald Pearson and Daryl Chapin discovered the Silicon Solar Cell, in 1953. After this, around 1956, many things start to change. Solar cells are then being put into everyday objects like toys and radios. To major accomplishments, like the first spacecraft being powered by solar cells. This spacecraft, Soyuz 1, was launched in 7 From then on, solar power took ott in a slow but never ceasing climb. From to 1990, solar began powering railroad crossings to powering houses. Another major ilestone solar energy has passed is a solar car in 1982 created by Hans Tholstrup, the â€Å"Quiet Achiever. † To think that then there were energy sources that one could never run out of. Just like being able to harvest the power of the wind. The first windmill was reportedly in Persia in 7 A. D. They used the windmills to water their crops. This passed on through Asia and spread to Africa and other surrounding areas. The Dutch in the 14th century created the tower windmill with the larger lattice work arms with the stretched canvas across. This is the windmill that many people picture when they think of a windmill. With this design, they were now able to move larger amounts of water to where they needed water. By the 19th century the windmill count was a s high as 30,000. The windmill craze caught on in America and spread throughout the Great Plains. The peak time for windmills was from about 1880 to 1935. During this time many farmers relied on these windmills to bring the water. Without water, they have no crops and no life essentially. In 1930, the windmill can to a massive roadblock that halted windmills as they knew it back then. The Rural Electrification Administration made it possible to pump 20 to 30 gallons of water with a simple electric pump. This killed the windmill. In the mix of windmills and the Industrial Revolution came steam power. In 1698, Thomas Savery coined the first steam powered pump. This then was improved by combining that with pistons and cylinders by Thomas Newcomen and again by James Watt. Steam power made it possible for factories to be anywhere. Whereas, windmills and water power had forced factories to be by large bodies of water. This sparked the industries to use steam power for everything from textile work to metalworking. James Watt lay claim to the term â€Å"horsepower. † He believed that with these steam engines he could replace how many horses? So from there it became 4 horse power, 5 horsepower and so on. Steam power really laid the ground work for many great inventions to come. The first steam powered locomotive was first put on track in 1804. This was a major step. Goods could now be transported by other means then animals and humans. The United Sates put a steam engine on a ship Just 3 short years later to make a 150 mile Journey. Steam power had been pushing society into a new level of transportation, labor and leisure. This green way of doing things slowly faded away with the coming age of the electric motors and internal combustion engines. Electric otors were also a green alternative to other engines that were not environmentally friendly. The first electric car is unknown. However, there are many individuals that made a remarkable impression of this fad. In 1828, †¦nyos Jedlik designed and invented an electric powered car. From then Robert Anderson, Professor Stratingh and his assistant Chistopher Becker and Thomas Davenport also invented an electric powered car. William Morrison’s design however made electric vehicles more practical with the capability of having a passenger. This pioneered the way for the first commercial taxi fleet in New York City, in 1897. Electric vehicles had many perks. For instance they did not smell bad, have bad vibrations and were not a loud as a gas powered vehicle. They were green and did not even know it. Many people do not even see this history as a green history, because they believe green technology to be a 21st century kind ot technology. Many people these days are blinded by society to see what is right in front of them, green technology and the importance to our world and communities it brings. To move forward in this technologically advanced world, as inhabitants of the Earth we need to look back to these unattended green advances nd learn from them. We have to revert back to technologies like those in order to save our planet and mankind. We need to learn to become eco-friendly to save what little â€Å"eco† we have left. In todays society, there are many green technologies out there from solar power and other renewable energy sources, hybrids and electric cars, and energy efficient appliances. Solar technology is by far the technology to take society to the next level of green thinking and a better way of life. Solar energy can provide electricity, can heat a house, and it can also save money from both a residential stand point to a ommercial perspective as well. Road signs and lights are also going green and using a solar powered systems to generate the power they need. This saves the government money as well. Going green and using renewable sources not only helps your wallet stay full, but it helps the environment as well. By using solar power, greenhouse gases and other air pollutants will decrease which in turn will be greatly beneficial to the environment. Here is a chart that shows the U. S. ‘s energy consumption: As we deplete the natural resources our plant has to offer, mankind needs to find a etter solution to bring down the petroleum, natural gas, and coal consumption to help clean up our environment and improve our quality of life. What humans pull from the ground is not an endless supply. This is a harsh reality that society needs to grasp in order to move forward into an eco-friendly way of life, which will be needed in the coming future. Not only do we need to cut energy consumption in our homes, but in our vehicles as well. Hybrids have come a very long way. They built the automobile industry from the ground up. Starting from steam to electric to gas guzzling SUVs, as a whole we have went forward by going backwards. The early concepts were not to save the environment and reduce pollution, they were simply a form of transportation. Nowadays, people want the fastest, coolest car no matter the price and what the repercussions are for owning a car that is not eco-friendly. Who cares if your car emits gases that are harmful to the environment or to yourself? Who cares if we use up all the oil in the world? My answer: We all should! If we Just take and take and give nothing in return to the Earth, where will we be in 50 years? A small change that can significantly improve our environment is our cars. Hybrids cars still use gasoline but to a much small scale and the back lashes from driving one is significantly better on our environment than a regular gas guzzling car. Many people are making the switch to hybrid cars. Not only are these cars fuel efficient, but can one day lead to a cleaner and brighter future. Below is a chart of hybrids bought from 1999 to last year 2012. This Chart from http://www. evsroll. com/ Hybrid_Car_Statistics. html really puts in perspective that now over a million hybrid cars have been bought since the slow start up or reintroduction of hybrid cars in 999. Along witn hybrid cars, a new wave ot appliances nave been making their way to the green scene. Energy efficient appliances may not seem like much, but in all actuality they can help a lot. An average house hold can cause Just as much pollution if not more than a gas powered car every year. How you may ask? Because the power plants we use to power our homes burn fossil fuel and the more energy we consume, the more fossil fuel that is burned that goes directly into our environment. When we purchase energy efficient appliances the less energy we use. This in turn causes the power lants to not burn as much fossil fuel right into our environment. These products will also help save money on utility bills as well. By using energy-efficient appliances, households can save up to $400 per year on utility bills. (EarthEasy)† With the advancing green technologies from hybrid cars to energy efficient appliances, there are many more to come in the future. Although one cannot predict the future, we can predict that green living and technologies will be on a slow uphill battle to gain support and usage throughout the world. In a sense, the fate of the world rest on these kinds o f technologies, because e need to find a way to live in harmony with nature and not completely suck it dry. The future is soon coming with green technology. As a society, we are Just now getting on to the solar panels and their systems. However, there is a Norwegian company, EnSol AS that has created a solar spray that goes on regular windows on a house. In some sense it is like putting Windex on the windows and not wiping it off. This transparent spray is that convenient that one cannot even tell the spray is there. This technology is going to bring solar power to many people because it has become so easy and convenient. I believe that with that there will be more technology that can make green technology easier and more convenient for consumers to use. I also believe that in the coming years the hybrid car market will skyrocket and continue to evolve to create cars that are more eco-friendly. I want to believe as a society we will become more environmentally aware of what is happening and what we can do to stop it. As individuals there are many ways to help by doing little things that we can control. Unplugging your appliances when they are not in use, will bring down energy costs and will eliminate wasted power. By composting your waste, you are giving back to environment and reducing waste because you are recycling for instance to a garden, that will help plants grow. A major component that everyone can do that will reduce plastic waste is to stop buying plastic water bottles and buy a water bottle that is reusable. Switch to Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs, these light bulbs can cut cost of energy and be a safer and efficient light source. Taking short showers and use cold water when washing your clothes are Just some more simple ways to cut energy costs. To help the environment more walk or ride your bike, instead of driving. Instead of putting pollutants into the air, you can get exercise in and enjoy time outside. Another key component would be to recycle every chance you get. All the little stuff adds up to the bigger picture. Also to recycle electronics the right way. Do not throw them away in the garbage. There is special places you can take your electronics to recycle. And finally, turn off the lights. When you leave a room do not leave the light on, this is Just plan wasteful and throwing money right out the window. Within this paper, I covered green technologies history, what green technology is can do to make an impact. Green technology is our future and our way to make a better, safer and healthier environment. http://www.hybridcars.com/history-of-hybrid-vehicles/ http://www.worldwatch.org/resources/go_green_save_green http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/21/top-10-green-countries-ph_n_241867.html http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/trump-tv-ratings http://www.sciencefocus.com/article/future/exciting-new-green-technology-future https://www.pluralsight.com/blog/life/green-tech-past-present https://www.treehugger.com/htgg/how-to-go-green-in-the-community.html http://time.com/section/health/ http://www.amerlux.com/content/press-releases/files/Amerlux_Energy_Observer_8-131.pdf https://www.greentechmedia.com/channel/gridtech/events/live/the-networked-ev-2011/articles/read/Solar-Dumping-Claim-CASM-Responds-to-CASE-and-CPIA/P3235 http://www.livescience.com/2612-steam-engine-changed-world.html http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=1792348 How to cite Green technology, Papers

Research for Senior Manager Impact of Social Media

Question: Discuss about the Research for Senior Manager for Impact of Social Media. Answer: Introduction In a highly competitive world, it is important for any organization to gain brand recognition, as well as to continue interacting with the consumers, lest the organization is forgotten and replaced by rival organization. The importance of social media marketing cannot be overemphasized, as the social media posts can be employed in order to drive targeted traffic, and also helps an organization build valuable relation with the consumers. However, there are various organizations which are still skeptical about the use of social media in business, and hence do not invest sufficiently in social media marketing programs. Hence, this particular research aims at highlighting as well as critically evaluating the effectiveness of social media marketing, as far as Hilti Corporation is concerned. The research intends to understand how far social media can affect the sale rate and business growth of Hilti Corporation, and to what extent it helps in enhancing the annual revenue of the organizatio n. Organization Overview Hilti Corporation is one of the most leading organizations in the market of UAE that de alsa with the machineries that are used in construction systems. Hilti Corporation has its operations in more than 120 countries (Hilti United Arab Emirates 2016). The main products in which Hilti Corporation has its specializations are: 1. Anchor systems 2. Chemicals for constructions 3. Machines for sawing, cutting and grinding 4. Fire stop 5. Machine demolition and drilling 6. Installation systems 7. Solar systems 8. Measuring systems 9. Faade mounting systems Aims and Objectives of the Research The main aim of the research is to find out the impact of social media on the business of Hilti Business. 1. The objectives of the research are: 2. To evaluate the impact of social media in Hilti Business 3. To study how Hilti can increase its revenue using the social media Research Questions The research questions for this research paper are: 1. What is the impact of social media in Hilti Business? 2. How can Hilti revenue increases using social media? Literature Review Many organizations in UAE made use of the social media so that they are able to promote their products during the time of festivals. The household products manufacturer, Procter and Gamble, which is based on Cincinnati used the social media to promote the complete range of products during Ramadan. The viewership of YouTube for the products of Procter and Gamble increased from twenty percent to thirty percent following their promotion in the social media. The similar blog presented a quote by Ali Faruqi that Procter and Gamble prefer to remain in the place where the customers will stay. Many organizations are using the social media to know about the feedback of the customers and solving their quires over the social media (Piller, Vossen and Ihl 2012). The organizations even used the social media to tailor make their products as asked by the customers. #Etihadsuggests is one such campaign by Etihad Airways had attempted to customize their products and promoting them in social media by giving the suggestions to the customers regarding travel and tourism. It was after the advent of Arab Spring that the organizations came to know about the strength of the social media and the engagement of the consumers. However, it was found that Twitter was famous than face book in UAE. On the contrary, the social media affected many organizations negatively. As per the report published by Nexgate, out of every five Facebook account that claim to present Fortune-500 companies are not authorized. As a result, the fotuene-500 companies have to face at least one incident on social media every day. The misuse of social media can be seen in Facebook. The negative effect of social media not only affected the business of the organization but also the brand image of the organization. Some of the examples of such can be seen through the problems faced by a restaurant chain in Chipotle. The hackers changed their profile picture by a swastika avatar and posted comments that are offensive to the public in their Twitter Handle. However, Chipotle is not responsible for such issues, but they had to apologize to the public for the content that was published. Etihad Airways also had to face similar consequences when 10th may 2015, Flight 650 carrying 128 passengers had to be diverted to a military base after getting a threat in their Twitter account. Later no attack was made and Etihad Airways concluded that the threats were just the work of the hackers. Thus, it can be said that the organizations have to decide the correct way to use the social media for their business. It can help in generating the revenue for an organization or can tarnish the image of the organization resulting in huge losses for the organization. Social media will be helpful for any organization to reach the customers and make their presence felt in the market. The organization can make use of social media for its business but with proper measures and checklist. Research Design and Methodology Data Collection Method Both the secondary and the primary data will be collected for this research paper. A survey has been conducted with the Hilti employees and analysis of data has been done. They will respond on the impact of social media on the buying habits of the customers as far as the products of the Hilti Corporation are concerned (Bryman and Bell 2015). On the other hand, the secondary data that will be in the form of previous research works by other authors will be helpful for the research to get an idea about the impact of social media on the business Sampling Method Two types of sampling methods that can be incorporated in the research papers 1. Probability sampling 2. Non-probability sampling When the number of participants cannot be measured in the beginning of the research. The person carrying out the research has to depend on the evidence and the participants that will come in their way, then probability sampling will be used in that research work (Denscombe 2014). On the contrary, there are certain research works where the numbers of participants are known from the beginning, and then the person who is carrying out the research will adopt non-probability sampling (Polonsky and Waller 2014). For the present research, non-probability sampling will be taken into consideration. The numbers of participants are known from the beginning. The exact data and facts are also taken into considerations that will be helpful for the research work. Ethical Issues An ethical issue is an important part of the research that should be taken care once there are a number of participants taking part in the research. It will be taken care that none of the participants are forced to take part in the research. The personal information of the participants is one of the sensitive parts of the research work (Wilson 2014). The personal information of the participants would not be published if the participants were unwilling to share their personal information in any external place. A proper environment should be provided to the participants while they are answering the questions, they should get a healthy and spacious place, and the place should not cause any danger to the participants (Smith and Blumenthal 2012). Special attention will be given while accessing the secondary data as well (Miller et al. 2012). Many sites do not let a visitor access the full documents. None of the unethical ways will be used to access the sites. Either the required amount will be paid to access the site or some other sites will be used to write the information in the research paper (Sarantakos 2012). Research Limitations Some employees might have had some issues with the usage of social media. Hence, even if the social media marketing has benefitted the business, they might not share their experience. As a result, exact result might not be achieved from the interviews. Many websites limit the access of the information to certain users. The users will have to a pay a certain amount of price to access the entire amount. In such a situation, much information might not be incorporated in the research paper . As a result, some of the instant information and data might be missed out from the research. Time Table Task 1st 2 3 4 5 6 7 Secondary Data Collection Preparation of assessment tools Contacting with the respondents Collection of Primary Data : Presentation of the Primary Data Compilation and Analysis of Primary Data Report Submission Introduction: Gone are the days when business is all about making purchase and sale of products and service. In a highly competitive world of business, each consumer is offered the opportunity of choosing his products, from a variety of options laid before him. Herein lies the importance of choosing the most effective and innovative form of promotional strategy, so that an organization can reach out to a huge number of people in the shortest possible time. Keeping in consideration, the significant role social media plays in the life of tech-obsessed people in todays world, it is important to note that social media plays a vital role in influencing the purchasing decision of the consumers. Social media form of marketing has been enjoying a phenomenal success in engaging the consumers with the products, service and brand of an organization (Aral et al. 2013). Hilti Corporation is a very recognized Liechtenstein multinational organization thatdeals with the manufacture of products used for building, construction and mining industries. Hilti Corporation has opted for social media marketing, and employs different social media tools, for sales promotion, as well as for tracking the changing consumer demands (Hinterhuber and Liozu 2015). Background and problem statement: Hilti Corporation has been offering innovative solutions to the customers of the building maintenance and construction industries. However, even the most recognized organizations need to keep on updating the consumers about their latest products, discounts, or achievement, lest they are forgotten. This is the reason, why Hilti Corporation has chosen the social media form of marketing. The benefits from social media marketing can surpass the benefits of print media marketing, as social media help in selling the product, while building a valuable relation with the consumers. Social media tools help an organization in informing its consumers about the recently launched products and service. They promote the product, in a much friendlier manner, rather than adopting the typical commercial approach. Social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram help an organization in a multiple ways, but however, at the same time, it is important to understand how far the social media tools inf luence a consumer. Hilti Corporation has been employing social media form of marketing over the last years, and it has been updating its consumers about the new service and attractive discounts, via Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn (Stelzner 2012). However, it is important for the management authority of Hilti Corporation to understand and evaluate the way in which the existent or the new consumers respond to this form of promotional strategy. The management authority of each organization must be well-informed about how the consumers respond to the tweets or the Facebook posts, promoting their products and services. Any business organization works with the aim of profit maximization. Hilti Corporation invests adequate time and money for social media marketing, and so it should understand how social media helps the organization in increasing product sales and gaining greater recognition . Research Aim: Hilti Corporation has been employing social media marketing, as an effective tool for interacting with the consumers and promoting the sale of its products. Keeping this in consideration, the aim of the research is to understand and critically analyze the impact of social media on the consumers of Hilti Corporation. After discussing the aims and objectives of the research, the research will be carried out by employing qualitative and quantitative data. On the one hand, the articles and journals will be used as informative sources of knowledge about the concerned topic; on the other hand survey will be conducted for understanding the situation at hand. Based on the information collected, the data will be analyzed to understand and critically evaluate the impact social media exercises on Hilti Corporation. Accordingly, necessary recommendations will be made, if necessary (Pickard 2012). Literature Review: Nowadays, a huge number of people invest most of their time during leisure, using various social media sites. It is no shocking fact that the latest report by Global Web Index reported that the internet accounts for as much as 57% of global media consumption, out of which social media accounts for 26% of peoples media time (Trainor et al. 2015) . The report also claims that social media has already outrivaled ordinary digital media, such as television, and hence it has become extremely popular among the masses. The greatest benefit of social media in business is that it can reach out to a wide number of people, at the least possible rate. As a result of deploying social media form of marketing, an organization can get greater exposure, and can interact with the consumers on a daily basis. In turn, the organization can succeed in creating a loyal customer base. Figure 1: Figure Showing the Growth of Social Media Usage Over the Last Years Source: (Rapp et al. 2013) As it is evident from the above figure, the number of people using social media has considerably grown over the years, and as such creating a Facebook page or opening up a Twitter account, can significantly influence the purchasing decision of the consumers. According to the Social Media Marketing Industry Report of 2015, approximately 92% of the organizations claimed that social media enhanced their profitability, and rendered them greater recognition than before (Gensler et al. 2013). The most important feature of social media marketing is that it enables the organization in knowing the target group of audience, with the help of Google+, Facebook, and other social media tools. This filtered search helps an organization attract the attention of the consumers who are in need of availing its service, or are willing to purchase the kind of products produced by it. The Deloitte report highlighted the importance of social media marketing strategy in case of large, multinational organizations as well. The report stated that a huge number of consumers who use social media, are four times more likely to consume a product than those who are not regular users of social media. Social media creates a virtual world, where an organization can promote its product, by creating an element of personal touch in the content of the advertisement. A story-telling mode of narration is used while advertising about a product on Instagram, and if the content is meaningful and effective enough to create an impact on the mind of the consumer, he will easily be persuaded to buy it; Again, when an individual finds his friends and relatives expressing their admiration for a specific product, by liking, and sharing the product, the individual is also likely to consume the product. The effective use of social media marketing strategy can remarkably help an organization in gaining competitive advantage over the rival organizations. High quality service and promotion go hand in hand. If an organization focuses chiefly on the production of its products, and dismisses the importance of informing the consumers about the exclusive benefits it offers, it will fail to influence the buying decision of the consumers. Hilti Corporation is a large organization, and despite the huge recognition it has earned over the years, it actively employs social media tools for engaging with the consumers, and for gaining greater exposure, and for improving the sale. According to the Forbes magazine, social media presence enables an organization in multiple ways, and directly contributes to its success. It drives purchase, it engages the consumers in a more active way, builds a strong relation with them, and allows an organization to understand if the consumer is liking the product or not. Similarly, the consumers are also mostly pre-occupied with their own works, and as such social media marketing allows them to be informed about their favorite products as per their convenience Research Design and Methodology Research Method A research method is required to be chosen in order to conduct a research smoothly. For conducting any sort of research, data has to be collected, so that the same can be analyzed subsequently to reach a specific conclusion about the problem at hand. Hence, there should be a proper research design, stating the process of data collection. Here, in case of the present research, both Qualitative as well as Quantitative method of data collection is being used. The Qualitative method of data collection helps in gaining a critical insight into the problem, based on the books, journals and articles written by others. Again, the Quantitative method of data collection helps in understanding the problem in the light of present situation, by interpreting the statistical data collected through survey (Chang et al. 2016). Research Approach: The entire process of research is carried out by the employing the Deductive method of research approach. Social media marketing and promotional strategy has always been known to have a remarkable influence on the consumers, and as such taking this fact compelling, the research is being undertaken to test the validity of the truth. The research is being undertaken by moving from the general to the specific; at first the theories are being read, and then survey is being conducted to test the hypothesis. Figure 2: Deductive Method of Research Source: (Bryman et al. 2015) Research Strategy: Any research should have a proper framework showing the basic structure, as to how the research is being conducted. There are two kinds of research philosophy that can be adopted in a research- Positivism and Interpretivism. Positivist research philosophy upholds the view that only factual knowledge gained through observation is to be considered real, and hence here the researcher relies on data collection and objective interpretation of the data for reaching the conclusion. On the other hand, in case of Interpretivism, the researcher relies more on personal interviews and subjective observations, to understand the personal viewpoint of each respondent. Here, Positivist paradigm is being used as it involves a scientific, objective approach to a problem, based on the experimental and manipulative methods. As a result of the Positivist approach, the research is based solely on the information gathered, and is absolutely free from any sort of bias on part of the researcher (Sarantakos 2 012). The data will be is collected with the help of both qualitative as well as quantitative research method. The qualitative method of data collection helps in gaining a critical insight into the relation that exists between the use of social media tools and the success of an organization (Ritchie et al. 2013). On the other hand, the quantitative method helps in recording the immediate response of the employees about the extent to which they have been able to influence the consumers of Hilti Corporation. For conducting the survey effectively, the appropriate sampling method has to be adopted. It enables choosing the right target audience, in providing response to the questions. The questions asked in the survey are based on the relation between the social media marketing strategy adopted by Hilti Corporation, and the extent to which it influences the consumers. For this reason, the stratified sampling method is being used (Levi and Lemishow 2013). In this method, the subset of pop ulation selected, shares two important common characteristics: Each of the respondents is an employee of Hilti Corporation Each of the respondents uses social media tools, almost on a regular basis. The survey was conducted on 30 employees whereby they were provided with a questionnaire, and the respondents were required to tick the most suitable answer out of five alternatives provided in the form of a statement. It is quite tough to approach each employee in person for completing the survey, and hence a few surveys were being done by emailing the questionnaire to the particular respondents. Data Collection Method Data collection is a process by which the data is collected and gathered, so that it can be analyzed. There are two methods by which the data for a particular research is collected: Qualitative method Quantitative Method (Mathhews and Ross 2014) In this research, data is collected by employing both the methods. At first, the literary articles, journals and books were being thoroughly read. These secondary sources of knowledge were being collected to get a comprehensive knowledge about the impact social media exercises in the minds of the consumers, and how it contributes to the organizational success. However, this form of qualitative data collected helps in getting general conclusion from the specific business situations, and hence to get a problem-specific solution, the quantitative method of data collection is being used. A survey is conducted whereby the different employees of Hilti Corporation, holding managerial designations, were being asked regarding their opinion about the effectiveness of the social media marketing strategy adopted by Hilti Corporation. The statistical data collected from the survey is being used to critically evaluate the effectiveness of the social media usage of large organizations, such as Hilt i Corporation. Ethical Issues: It is important to incorporate ethical and legal principles, in the process of conducting the research. Every researcher has a set of ethical obligations that he needs to adhere to, and the particular research is also conducted with ethical approval. The research has been conducted with the help of individual efforts and independent study, and does not involve any sort of plagiarism in the content. For the purpose of conducting the survey, no participant was being compelled to participate against his own will, and after participation no embarrassing or sensitive question was being asked. The respondents of the survey were being first informed about the aim and objective of the research, and then only were allowed to participate in the research process. Above all, the confidentiality of the data shared by an individual respondent has been maintained, and will not be disclosed under any circumstance, against his will. It was ensured that the research is being carried out without causin g any form of harm to the participants involved (Dave et al. 2016). Data Analysis: It is very important to analyze the collected data in a very accurate way so that one is not misled by the wrong conclusion. From the survey conducted, it was found out that 63.3% of the employees of the Hilti corporation has claimed that they agree with the fact that social media has played an important role in the success of Hilti Corporation. Furthermore, around 63.3% of the respondents have also agreed that social media tools help in the effective promotion of its products, thereby increasing its sales manifold. Although only 20% of the respondents said that social media interaction with consumers helps them to understand their needs of the consumers, 46.7 % of the employees admitted that social media has helped in increasing the number of consumers of the organization (Refer to the students file ). However, it should be noted that only a mere 23.3 % of the respondents found social media marketing to be more effective than any other traditional form of marketing, and hence discar ding the other advertising media, such as newspapers or digital media may not be a right decision. Again, 43.3 % of the respondents stated that Facebook or Twitter does not help sufficiently in knowing the consumer demand and expectations, and hence alternative strategy has to be adopted. However, 63.3 % of the managers have agreed that social media does help them sustain itself in a highly competitive construction industry. Findings and Interpretations: From the research, it was being discovered that creating a website and being present on the online platform has been one of the most effective strategies undertaken by Hilti Corporation. The social media tools, such as Twitter and Facebook have considerably helped Hilti Corporation maintain competitive edge. The organization with the help of social media tools, improves its responsiveness to the consumer queries, reaches out to a huge number of new potential consumers and enhances its brand image (Laroche et al. 2013). It has been observed that social media marketing strategy is undoubtedly an effective strategy for the promotion of products of Hiliti Corporation, but however, over-reliance on it is useless. Hilti Corporation should also invest sufficient money for advertising its products via emails or mobiles, as it helps in communicating the message individually to the respective consumer. Further, people have a natural affinity for newspapers and magazines, and hence employing pr int media will also be equally useful. Besides, despite the fact that social media plays an important role in the promotion of a product, Hilti Corporation must conduct surveys to know the demands of the consumers. Further, Hilti Corporation should rely more on Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software if it intends to understand the ever changing demands of the consumers. Conductive extensive market research can also help the organization comprehend the expectations of the potential consumers. However, social media marketing, as found from the research, is an effective way of surviving in a competitive market, and hence the organization must employ a social media marketing team, that will be entrusted with the duty of enhancing the brand recognition of Hilti Corporation among the social media users. Conclusion and Recommendation: Social profiles as well as websites can help in improving the brand image of an organization. It is a misconception that only small organizations should seek the help of social media marketing. Any organization needs to engage in the process of social media marketing strategy if it intends to influence the purchasing decision of its consumers. Hilti Corporation should adopt more innovative strategies for social media marketing. However, the authority should remain cautious lest any negative complaint or remark on these sites get viral, and malign the organizations reputation. The social media managers should not only focus on promoting the brand on the social sites, but should also ensure that any sort of negative comment is coolly dealt with, outside the social platform. It should be remembered that the consumers should not feel disgusted with the marketing campaigns on social media sites, and hence Hilti Corporation needs to create innovative ideas of promotion that will actively e ngage the attention of the consumers. Telling interesting stories, using catchy taglines, hiring celebrities to represent the brand on these social sites, can help the organization easily get the attention of the consumers. Future Scope of the Study: Any social site is usually used with the purpose of gaining new consumers, but however, the social sites can also be used in order to form a valued relation with the clients. Organizations like Hilti Corporation, should engage more in interaction with the consumers, and if necessary can reward the loyal consumers, by announcing them voucher winners, via social sites. This instant success and recognition a consumer gets overnight can successfully help in increasing consumer loyalty as well as developing the brand image. The organizations need to chalk out various new and innovative strategies through which they can easily draw the attention of the consumers towards the newly launched products and services. Social media marketing is the most effective and yet affordable methods of marketing that helps any organization advertise about their products, without making the consumers feel that they are overwhelmed by the organizations marketing campaigns. Malcolm Baldrige and the Evolution of Total Quality Management Essay Essays

Malcolm Baldrige and the Evolution of Total Quality Management Essay Essays Malcolm Baldrige and the Evolution of Total Quality Management Essay Essay Malcolm Baldrige and the Evolution of Total Quality Management Essay Essay Quality and productiveness can be considered reciprocally inclusive. An organisation that aims for quality will finally consequences to better productiveness in the construct of services. goods being produced. forces and human resources development. non to advert capital addition. addition in fight. and increase in investing chances. Though it may be a good construct. a regulating organic structure should be present to find the necessary standards and set for unequivocal criterions to follow. In the United States. the two regulating organic structure in choice standard award are the Ron Brown Award and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Malcolm Baldrige. a U. S. Secretary of Commerce during the epoch of the Reagan Administration. is the 1 responsible for forming a conference on productiveness in the White House. Apparently. he initiated the construct and design in 1987 of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award: which focuses on quality. The award. through the National Quality Improvement Act of 1987 ( Public Law 100-107 ) . gives accent on quality services being given by different sectors such as instruction. wellness attention. concern. and non-profit organisations ( Marion p. 1 ) . These quality services are based on the patterns of the Total Quality Management System ( TQM ) rules and incorporate seven standards to find the awardees: Leadership. Strategic Planning. Market and Customer Focus ; Measurement. Analysis and Knowledge Management. Focus on Workforce. Process Management. and Results. These standards are considered important to U. S. fight in footings of bettering the capablenesss. patterns. and consequences of an organisation ; sharing and easing the most first-class pattern among the different sectors ; and to function as a working tool usher for planning and managing. Most of these standards are taken from the rules and techniques in quality direction developed by Philip Crosby. W. Demings. Armand Feigenbaum. and Joseph Juran. Furthermore. the award aims to advance important degree of quality consciousness ; to be able to separate the accomplishments of U. S. companies in the context of quality ; and to do available to the populace the thriving schemes on quality. The procedure of choosing the victor involves an appraisal of the written scrutiny submitted by the applier. a site visit on the company ( provided that the company achieved a high mark ) . and a concluding rating. Since the Malcolm Award is based on the rule of Entire Quality Management. the system have evolved or developed in footings of the factors in public presentation measuring that includes the followers: operating or in service steps. employee relationship. satisfaction of clients. and public presentation on fiscal facets. For case. based on the information of the 12 Companies that submitted their several pertinent informations for rating. on an one-year footing merchandise dependability increased by around 11. 3 % ; the clip of treating the order is reduced yearly by 12 % on the six companies ; merchandise mistakes and defects decreased by 10. 3 % on the seven companies ; and around five companies have reduced cost by 9 % . This created a nest eggs of around $ 1 Million to $ 115 Million. Aside from the betterment on the factors on public presentation measuring. indexs of employee relationship besides improved. Employee satisfaction improved by 1. 4 % . employee turnover ( voluntary petition for separation ) decreased by around 6 % . wellness and safety steps improved by 1. 8 % . and the accrued total-quality suggestions made by the employees increased by 16. 6 % . The entire client satisfaction besides increased by 2. 5 % with ailments coming from the client being reduced by 11. 6 % and keeping of clients besides improved by 1 % . Market portion is increased by 13. 7 % and the return of assets by 1. 3 % ( Shetty p. 4-6 ) . Therefore. Entire Quality Management had finally improved in footings of quality. client satisfaction. and decrease in cost. Furthermore. the Entire Quality Management System had an affirmatory impact on all of the important countries of concerns: betterment in merchandise dependability. increased in client satisfaction and reactivity. and decrease in cost. Apparently related to these are the addition in occupation satisfaction. betterment of wellness and safety steps. and decrease in employee turnover. This betterment and decrease on specific countries will finally give to increase in the market portion. profitableness. and quality. The consequence of such will besides bring forth a certain grade of competitory advantage. which is finally acquired as a consequence of perpetrating to quality. A steadfast competitory place will give the company a alone topographic point in the market wherein the consumers are willing to pay for the merchandise. and the established quality will go hard to overcome by the viing companies. Another factor to see in accomplishing a competitory advantage is through the decrease of cost by bettering quality. Reducing cost is synonymous to decrease of the in-process work stock list. handling of stuffs. capitals on equipment and care. therefore cut downing claims on liability. The decreased costs will in-turn lead to a higher net income border. addition in the gross revenues. and lower monetary values of the merchandise. Therefore. cost and quality are the most of import factors to accomplish a competitory advantage and these can be realized through the execution of Entire Quality Management System. The execution of the Total Quality Management depends on the demand and the nature of the concern. Companies that adopted a TQM. and later succeeded on all countries described above still have to go on on developing the system. It is considered a uninterrupted procedure and development. Different sectors of the industry such as in the wellness attention. fabrication. services. and little concerns are going more cognizant of the positive impact of following TQM. and the aspiration of being recognized as one of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awardees set forth the scene to a strong committedness towards excellence in direction quality and company public presentation. The Award started at 1988 and after 20 old ages. around 79 companies are recognized. The impact of following the standards of Malcolm Baldrige through the execution of TQM had significantly produced quality and productiveness to several companies such as: The ADAC Laboratories. Custom Research Inc. . Dana Commercial Credit Corp. . and Trident Position Manufacturing Inc. ( Malcolm Baldrige receivers of 1996 ) . Of these four. Trident and Custom Research belongs to the little concern class. ADAC in the fabrication sector. and Dana Commercial on services. The ADAC Laboratories. founded in 1970. have its merchandise line in the design. fabrication. selling. and support intended for clients belonging in the wellness attention sector such as in radiation therapy. information system in wellness attention. and atomic medical specialties. These services and merchandises are sold to universities. infirmaries. and clinics worldwide. The impact of following the standards of Malcolm Baldrige has significantly improved the company’s market portion ( 12 % in 1990 to 50 % in 1996 ) . and client satisfaction ( no. 1 ranking ) . Before. the company was merely focused on short-run fiscal ends. and non wholly oriented towards achieving a quality house for investors and customer’s satisfaction. and employee development. Determined to over-turn the current state of affairs. the company adopted the standards of Malcolm Baldrige. In 1994. ADAC applied for the Malcolm Baldrige acquiring up to the 2nd degree ( site visit ) . The site visit accordingly gave the company a feedback appraisal with around 148 countries of concerns that needs betterment. The company so utilized the feedback study as an external resource to extinguish the spreads. The direction squad attended the Center for Quality of Management. a pool of experts in the field of Entire Quality Management. The intensive two-day preparation made all employees understands the four relevant ideas: shared acquisition. entire engagement. focal point on client. and uninterrupted development. Consequently. the turn-around of the company to concentrate on client satisfaction had lead to a strong rate of keeping with 94 % as compared to the old 50 % ; market portion increased by 50 % as compared to 12 % six old ages ago ; and the gross per worker increased by around 75 % ( Marion P. 1 ) . The consequences by following the standards verified the sort of quality direction the company had developed with accent on quality and excellence. Dana Commercial Credit Corporation. a subordinate of Dana Corp. . provides funding and renting services to a broad scope of concerns and specific markets. Located at different offices such as in Canada. United Kingdom. and Ohio ; the company have activities that includes direction of assets services. combined-venture renting pool. and leasing of equipment for makers and traders. The company decided to use for the Malcolm Baldrige Award for two compelling grounds: after having the Dana Quality Leadership award. the company intended to benchmark it alongside the Malcolm Baldrige ; and the challenge of prosecuting the Baldrige award will supply a important â€Å"push† towards a fast betterment in quality for the company. Making through the procedure of the Baldrige standards finally created a strong civilization with accent on service quality and client satisfaction. In return. the morale of the employees is high every bit good as the net income. Custom Research Inc. is one of the little houses that received the Baldrige Award that clearly shows that no affair what the size of the company. better quality direction can besides be achieved merely like those of transnational companies. Established in 1974 by Jeff Pope and Corson. CRI caters large companies in planing and carry oning undertakings that can supply relevant information to do effectual determinations in concern. The chief office is located at Minneapolis with several offices in Ridgewood and San Francisco. and New Jersey. In 1998. the company had reduced its client from 138 to 67. chiefly to supply better service every bit good as set up partnership with their biggest clients. From 1992 to 1994. the company had applied for an appraisal to Baldrige and reached the site visit degree three times. After having the Minnesota Award for Quality in 1995. CRI decided to re-apply once more for the Baldrige since the award was patterned to it. Wining the province award had helped the company accomplishing its end to be awarded by Baldrige in 1996. Since the employees are less. all took portion during the application and assessment procedure wherein each employee knows the whole procedure. the standard. and how it is should be implemented in their several field of work. Therefore. the Baldrige Award had greatly influenced all employees towards accomplishing quality and productiveness making a positive ambiance to the company. In return. the employees are all motivated that consequences to better concern chances and consequences. Trident Precision Manufacturing Inc. is a private company that manufactures assorted constituents of sheet metal ( preciseness ) . customized merchandises. and assemblies ( electromechanical ) . With its lone fabrication works in New York. the Company developed procedures and tooling to industry and assemble constituents intended for the different sectors of the industry such as in equipment used in office. Bankss. wellness attention. and even defence. Trident began to work the standards of Baldrige in their pursuit for quality in 1989. The standards had served as an unfastened window to cognize the countries of failings and strength of the company. April Lusk. Trident’s decision maker for quality. emphasized that the biggest important plus of the Baldrige Quality Award procedure was the feedback study. which stands for an indifferent appraisal of a company’s strength and failings. Trident so utilized those feedback studies to contract the spreads and finally achieved better consequences: due to a strong focal point in client satisfaction. the company has been able to keep its place as the chief provider to head clients even though it reduced their provider per centum to 65 % ; the focal point on employee engagement besides played a major function accomplishing a 100 % employee engagement on departmental business squad. around 95 % of the betterment on procedures have been established. the acknowledgments and wagess for the employees increased. employee turnover decreased. and the company have invested 4. 6 % of the paysheet towards instruction and preparation ( Marion p. 1 ) . The uninterrupted betterment of the employee. their committedness to the internal and external patronage. and the eventual â€Å"control† of their procedures have made Trident to stand out and set up a dedication towards excellence and quality. More so. Trident’s strong avowal towards an environment that is household oriented. uninterrupted attempt for betterment. and teamwork are the chief factors the Baldrige Award considered. Duties are shared. suggestions considered and implemented so as to make an environment where the employees are satisfied and their morale is high. ensuing to a stronger and a healthier concern. The background discussed on the four companies clearly illustrated the impact of implementing the rules of Entire Quality Management System through the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Awards. These companies aspired to accomplish the Baldrige Award and the consequences improved the company’s overall quality and productiveness plan. every bit good as their concern position and fight. By analysing the narratives behind each success of a company towards accomplishing the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Awards. several cardinal arrows should be stress such as the followers: Leadership besides plays an of import function towards achieving quality. Top direction should exercise attempt in footings of leading and support since the attachment to quality normally accompanies alterations in the company’s runing systems or doctrine. Clear ends should be determined every bit good as a positive ambiance or civilization to promote the employees to achieve such ends. The presence of a extremely motivated staff or employees besides has important parts towards achieving quality. Quality depends on the employee’s efficiency. and later to the employees work motive. It besides encompasses all the facet of human resources such as employee preparation and recruitment plan. occupation descriptions. and honoring every bit good as authorising employees. Employee engagement are considered an of import facet. and besides the encouragement of a corporate vision towards quality-related betterment activities and plans may necessitate several major accommodations or alterations the manner the employees are being managed ( Shetty p. 6 ) Another factor that is important is the purpose for a entire client satisfaction. Recognizing this vision will make an attempt towards bettering quality. Exceptional external and internal systems are necessary to oversee client satisfaction through the usage of studies. rating of services and merchandises. and probe of ailments ( Reiman p. 11 ) Analysis of information is besides critical since this will function as a footing on doing corporate determinations and accommodations. Efficient and complete informations garnering serves as a powerful tool for the company since these will reflect the strengths. failings. ends. quality. and service criterions. to call a few. Suppliers besides have a important function in the chase of quality. Normally. successful companies develop durable relationships with providers holding a vision for quality. The company comparatively engages the providers to go an built-in portion of the firm’s TQM. Consultations. preparations. and go oning contracts are some of the ways the company engages the providers on its TQM plan. Therefore. the providers become a spouse in administrating quality attempts. which in bend have major effects on how the providers are conventionally managed. The committedness to quality is a unbounded procedure ; hence. a uninterrupted plan for betterment and development should be implemented. The consequences on the companies that implemented the Total Quality Management System in chase of accomplishing the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards proved to be a success. The end-results created better clients satisfaction. high morale of employees. reduced cost. decreased on employee turn-over. good competitory advantage. improved wellness and safety steps. better production processes. increased in market portion and net incomes. quality and productiveness. The Malcolm Baldrige Award provides a huge scope of quality concerns. The feedbacks made by the Award commission can be use by the company to contract the relevant spreads. which are based on the findings. The award served as an effectual usher with regard on streamlining the concern and direction patterns. The standard set Forth by Baldrige. based on the rules of Entire Quality Management. provided the important criterions of excellence to accomplish quality and productiveness. Julio Le Parc Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Julio Le Parc - Case Study Example 501). For instance, the design of the exhibition played on the disparity between dark and bright spots, with some works hanging in openings to produce a sensory experience. The sensory experience was the true identification of the kinetic art since its mixed light, energy and movement in one perspective. The experiment also had a revolving mirrored discs and simple apparatus with small unsteady motors operating at different speeds to reflect and project light into the space. The notion was to play with the audiences’ perception and attract their concentration in the hall (Ruhrberg & Walther 2000, p. 501). As a result, the light’s movement over the setting and the audiences’ motion in reaction to them generated the work of art. To achieve the light and movement result, the arrangement had to be in a dark hall where light is perceived as both image and refraction. The significance of this research is that it led to the discovery of modern light and movement art works in architecture (Grabes 2008, p. 33). For instance, the designs of voids in buildings use concepts by Le Parc’s experiments to produce adequate lighting in houses. This art was about light and vibration of objects using optoelectronic properties. It concerned the use of light in different materials to illustrate space and movement frequency ranges. This work of art had simple elements adjusted in various ranges to show the light movements around the wall. A notable application of this project is used in Toyko museum where light movements were replicated in enclosed places. It was first exhibited in the French museum during an art show where light movement was put against mirrors (Herzog & Le Parc 2005, p. 58). This finding showed that light movement can actually operate under the influence of spectators within the environment. It also had discs that reflected the light during vibration from the surrounding systems. This was produced by putting a box in the middle of projects, which were

Giography Assignment (stateless nation) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Giography Assignment (stateless nation) - Essay Example For centuries before that date, the Jewish people basically lived as a religious group rather than one with a national homeland (Johnson, P., 2009). In Russia, the Dagestani homeland is the highland area of the Caucasus Mountains and occupies 70 percent of the Caspian Sea coastline. The Dagestan Republic has 31 official ethnic groups with over 80 nationalities. This area operates primarily on isolated clans, including its own language, cultural heritage and clan loyalties as the central focus, rather than considering itself a nation or a state (Minahan, 2002). This report covers the gypsies in several areas of the world. As a group unto themselves, there is no nation for the gypsies as they are group wanderers, settling down only for a short time before moving on. Information on the gypsies will be related to the following disciplines: physical, cultural and historical. The physical discipline will relate to places in different countries where they settled for any length of time. The cultural discipline will give an overview of how the gypsies lived their daily lives and what interactions they might have had with local populations. Finally, the historical discipline will outline how gypsies have affected national history and events while living in various countries, and how they, as an identified group, were viewed by the general population. Gypsies have always been regarded by nationals as being vagrants and somewhat unsavory because they moved around so much and did not interact with the public. Keeping to themselves and pretty much relying on the land was a principle they followed almost religiously. Townspeople were not inclined to reach out and attempt to make friends because of this negative view towards gypsies, perhaps fearing some thievery, or the possibility of catching diseases (Hoyland, 2011). Alternatively, gypsies avoided contact except in cases of great need in

Germany and the German Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Germany and the German - Assignment Example Honestly, the film was a sorry reminder of a heinous event that all Germans and the rest of world wanted to forget. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe could not have been magnified through Eisenman’s architectural work as it seemed to emphasize the magnitude of death that defies rational and logical reasoning. People have already felt pain and anguish just to be reminded of the genocide that occurred during those times, especially the relatives of the victims. To be reminded time and again is creating a numbing experience which could have created callousness and indifference to the present generation. It is not to say that everyone has forgotten the incident. It is just to express that at times, those who were directly hurt and affected by the crimes would like to move on with the lives, remembering the happy times instead of the gruesome, painful events that cannot be retracted or changed by any form of monumental

Duality in Waiting For Godot

Duality in Waiting For Godot Beckett is known to have commented, I had little talent for happiness.- This sentence in itself is absurd, like the most famous drama of Beckett: Waiting for Godot. But what exactly absurdity means? The original or dictionary meaning of absurd is Out of harmony. utterly or obviously senseless, illogical, or untrue; contrary to all reason or common sense; laughably foolish or false. But the word has a different meaning when it is used int he theatre of the absurd. Marking the difference between a good play and an absurd play, Martin Esslin opines: If a good play must have a cleverly constructed story, these have no story or plot to speak of : if a good play is judged by subtlety of characterization and motivation, these are often without recognizable characters and present the audience with almost mechanical puppets; if a good play has to have a fully explained theme, which is neatly exposed and finally solved, these often have neither a beginning nor an end; if a good play is to hold the mirror upto nature and portray the manners and mannerisms of the age in finely observed sketches, these seem often to be reflections of dreams and nightmares if a good play relies on witty repartee and pointed dialogues, these often consist of incoherent babblings. Waiting for Godot is chock-full of pairs. Theres Vladimir and Estragon, the two thieves, the Boy and his brother, Pozzo and Lucky, Cain and Abel, and of course the two acts of the play itself. With these pairs comes the repeated notion of arbitrary, 50/50 chances. One thief is saved and other damned, but for no clear reason. If Vladimir and Estragon try to hang themselves, the bough may or may not break. One man may die, one man may live. Godot may or may not come to save them. In the Bible, Cains sacrifice was rejected and Abels accepted for no discernible reason. Its minor, but Estragons line in Act I: My left lung is very weak [à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦]. But my right lung is sound as a bell! More pairs, more arbitrary damnation. Even the tone of Waiting for Godot is filled with duality: two person arguments, back-and-forth questions, disagreement-agreement, questions and (often inadequate) answers. The tree is the only distinct piece of the setting, so were pretty sure it matters. Right off the bat youve got the biblical stuff; Jesus was crucified on a cross, but that cross is sometimes referred to as a tree, as in, Jesus was nailed to the tree. That Vladimir and Estragon contemplate hanging themselves from the tree is likely a reference to the crucifixion, but it also parodies the religious significance. If Jesus died for the sins of others, Vladimir and Estragon are dying for nothing. But we can also think of the two men not as Jesus, but rather as the two thieves crucified along with Jesus. This fits quite nicely with gospels tale as Vladimir tells it; one thief is saved and the other damned, so Didi and Gogo are looking at a fifty-fifty chance. The uncertainty that stems from inconsistency between the four gospels is fitting, too, since Vladimir cant be certain if Godot is coming to save either one of them. Furthermore, Vladimir reports that he was told to wait for Godot by the tree. This should be reassuring it means the men are in the right place. As Estragon points out, theyre not sure if this is the right tree. And, come to think of it, they cant even be sure if this is a tree or not. It kind of looks like a shrub. The tree could be the tree of life. So the trees random blooming would suggest that it is something of a tree of life. And, according to the proverb, that means a desire has been fulfilled. Moreover the trees sprouting leaves could be an ironic symbol pointing out that, far from fulfilled desires, hopes have been deferred yet another day much like Vladimirs ironic claim in Act II that things have changed here since yesterday when, clearly, nothing at all has.. While Vladimir and Estragon wait for Godot, they also wait for nightfall. For some reason (again, arbitrary and uncertain), they dont have to wait for him once the night has fallen. The classic interpretation is that night = dark = death. The falling of night is as much a reprieve from daily suffering as death is from the suffering of a lifetime. Theres also the issue of the moon, as its appearance in the sky is the real signal that night has come and the men can stop waiting for Godot. Estragon, in one of his wicked smart moments, comments the moon is pale for weariness [à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦] of climbing heaven and gazing on the likes of us. Though the man remembers nothing of yesterday, he does in this moment seem to comprehend the endless repetition of his life. And if the moon is weary just from watching, imagine what that says about the predicament of the men themselves. Carrots and turnips are in one sense just a gag reel for Vladimir and Estragons comic bits. But I was interested in their disagreement over the vegetable: Funny, Estragon comments as he munches, the more you eat, the worse it gets. Vladimir quickly disagrees, adding that, for him, its just the opposite. On the one hand, this could be a completely meaningless conversation the point is simply that Vladimir is in disagreement, playing at opposites, adding to the bickering duality between himself and Gogo. On the other hand, the carrot could be about the meaning of life. It could be a hint as to the differences between the way Vladimir and Estragon live their lives. Vladimirs subsequent comment, an addendum to his carrot claim, is that he gets used to the muck as [he goes] along. He resigns himself to banality. Estragon, on the other hand, wearies as time passes much like the weary moon he observes in Act II. When Pozzo later dishes about smoking, he claims that a second pipe is never so sweet [as the first]. But its sweet just the same. This is a third and distinct answer to the carrot question. When Lucky is commanded to dance in Act I, Pozzo reveals that he calls his dance The Net, adding, He thinks hes entangled in a net. You would think a guy tied up on a rope leash would feel confined enough. Of course, the image of Lucky writhing in an imaginary net is a lasting image for the play as a whole, and especially for the plight of Vladimir and Estragon, who, as weve said before, are confined in a prison or perhaps a net of their own imaginations. There seems to be no shortage of inane props in Waiting for Godot, and these three have one thing in common: they are all absurd objects on which the men have developed irrational dependences. Lucky cannot think without his bowler. Pozzo needs his vaporizer to speak. Estragon seems condemned to forever take his boots on and off, as does Vladimir with his hat. This is another great combination of the tragic and the comic; the situation is hilarious for its absurdity, but dismal at the same time. Estragon is repeatedly repelled by smells in Waiting for Godot. Vladimir stinks of garlic, Lucky smells like who knows what, and Pozzo reeks of a fart in Act II. It seems every time Estragon tries to get close to a person, he is repelled by their odor. It looks to us like smells represent one of the barriers to interpersonal relationships. Estragon isnt just repelled by odors hes repelled by the visceral humanity of those around him. Theres something gritty and base about the odor of a human body, and for Estragon its too much to handle. There are several interpretations of Waiting for Godot, the two most well-known are the religious one and the political one. The religious interpretations posit Vladimir and Estragon as humanity waiting for the elusive return of a savior. If this is the basic idea, then this makes Pozzo into the Pope and Lucky into the faithful. The faithful are then viewed as a cipher of God cut short by human intolerance. The twisted tree can alternatively represent either the tree of death, the tree of life, the tree of Judas or the tree of knowledge. Political interpretations also abound. Some reviewers hold that the relationship between Pozzo and Lucky is that of a capitalist to his labor. This Marxist interpretation is understandable given that in the second act Pozzo is blind to what is happening around him and Lucky is mute to protest his treatment. The play has also been understood as an allegory for Franco-German relations. An interesting interpretation argues that Lucky receives his name because he is lucky in the context of the play. Since most of the play is spent trying to find things to do to pass the time, Lucky is lucky because his actions are determined absolutely by Pozzo. Pozzo on the other hand is unlucky because he not only needs to pass his own time but must find things for Lucky to do.

Culture Essay -- Anthropology, Durkheim, Functionalism

Throughout the complex yet recognised studies upon sociological phenomena, the term ‘culture’ continues to astound anthropological revisions. Whether or not a definition of ‘culture’ can be determined, or merely the exact forces which bring about such an abstract entity, the concept that culture exists can be acknowledged with focus to structural functionalism. The precise justification for culture itself began to enlighten anthropologists such as Durkheim, who in turn has encouraged studies from Malinowski and Parsons for instance. Still, existing theories suggest intensely dynamic and multifaceted definitions of ‘culture’, those of which ‘explain’ culture with various stances. Within contemporary studies, culture itself is often implied using the notion of functionalism. Durkheim outlines a society as a functional culture; both culture and society encompass systems and institutions which determine their own intentions (Durkheim, 1982). Each institution in a culture or society is a portrayal of the exact functions they have in that specific culture or society. Structural functionalism represents a paradigm of reality which interconnects the facets of civilisation and social order (Parsons, 1973). What’s more, it is these interrelations which may define culture as a system of collective purposes. Those specific purposes are determined by the civilisation of which they are present, thus often localised. Malinowski developed interpretations of functionalism in order to avoid ethnocentric ethnographies, and his work emphasises the impression that biological needs of a community are the forces which generate culture (Malinowski, 1944). The needs of a society encourage the development of institutions which function to fulf... ...xtent to which culture can be explained is very limited. A cultural system entitles the recognition of moral codes, survival mechanisms, cognition and an interaction with the environment. Durkheim revolutionised anthropological thoughts amongst sociological theory but the phenomena of ‘culture’ can scarcely be defined. An explanation of culture may encompass the notion that a specific set of views and behaviours will be adopted by a people and they will respond in certain ways, which is their culture. It is a form of society and believing which deviates towards a state of equilibrium; a state which will incorporate shared ideals and morality. The mere complexity and dynamic structure of culture ensures difficulty when explaining the concept; without properly being able to distinguish what culture is, one is also unable to determine its meaning and purpose.

Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult

Name: Jasmine Chan Date: 26-7-12 Summer holiday book report |Book Title: |Change of Heart |[pic] | |Author: |Jodi Picoult | | |Publisher: |Atria Books | | Plot summary: June’s daughter, Claire, needed a heart transplant. However, it was Shay, a man on death row for killing the rest of June’s family years ago, who wanted to donate his. After a grim, life-and-death struggle and careful consideration, June accepted Shay’s â€Å"grand† offer grudgingly, so Claire’s life was saved. Commentary: Before reading the book’s brief introduction, the words â€Å"change of heart† gave me the impression that this book is about a person suffering from heart failure and had to get a heart transplant from an unknown donor just like so many others did. After reading the blurb, I discovered that this is not the case. Actually, the plot is very special and the issue is very controversial and worth discussing so I started reading this book.I have to assure everyone that this book is a page-turner that impels readers to read towards the very last page. Would you fulfil your enemy’s dying wish to save the life of somebody you love? In this novel, Jodi Picoult delves into questions of vengeance, mercy, salvation and redemption by exploring the rage of June who already lost a daughter, the bitterness of Shay the criminal on death row and the fate of a critically-ill child to force them to think about a question: â€Å"Can even the most understandable thirst of vengeance be squashed if it means saving someone you love? In my opinion, as there is an old saying : What’s done, is done, I think June should forgive or at least put aside Shay’s wrongdoings and accept his kind offer because this would be an act of forgiving herself and other’s too. Moreover, this would be the only way to save her daughter (There was no one except Shay whose heart was suitable for Claire. ) However, of course, as a reader, we know that June’s family did not die of murder but manslaughter. So, that’s why I actively encourage June to accept Shay’s giving, which came out of love. As a result, my answer to June’s question : â€Å"Would you give up your vengeance against someone you hate if it meant saving someone you loved? † is definitely yes. Besides, I truly appreciate Jodi Picoult having the courage to write about these themes, which are novel, controversial and meaningful. Secondly, concerning about the characters, I think Shay was a hero because he was humble and willing to sacrifice himself. For example, when there were miracles –water turned into wine, Calloway’s pet robin was brought back to life and a tiny piece of gum became enough for all to share—happening under his finger in the prison, he did not boast about himself, but instead denied that he was a â€Å"Messiah† and said that he was just an ordinary man who wanted to donates his heart to sa ve a little girl called Claire for redemption.Besides, although nobody knew the truth—it was only because Shay wanted to protect Elizabeth from being sexually-abused by her stepfather, Kurt that he was compelled to shoot Kurt and accidentally shot Elizabeth too. He still insisted to die for Claire because he loved that family and wanted for redemption for his big mistake. Having lost a daughter and two husbands, June’s life was fraught with grief. I can vividly see how that grief shaped her character and informing the choices that she makes. At first, when she had lost her first husband, she was willing to take a second chance and let go of the past and start a new life by remarrying and giving birth to another girl. However, when her first daughter and second husband were â€Å"murdered†, she broke apart. When it came to the decision whether to have a restorative justice meeting with Shay and accepting his heart, June initially refused, which showed that she was no longer that flexible and easy to adapt to changes. Fortunately, in the end, being more rational, June made the correct decision—to take Shay’s heart.I think she made this choice in hopes of a better future, which was also a wise move. Last of all, looking upon the writing strategies, the way Jodi Picoult presents the story generates readers’ interest in finding out what’s going to happen. Each chapter is written from the perspectives of a different character. I get to know all the characters’ inner thoughts: their fear, hope, bitterness and above all, their reflections of what makes sense of them. I felt as if I were one of the characters while reading. I understood their feelings.I explored their complex minds. I walked with them in their life journeys. I felt deeply what they underwent. I could view things from different people’s perspectives. Through this, I could experience the sorrow and difficulties of June and her family. In the e pilogue, it is the first and the last chapter written from Claire’s perspectives, which makes the ending very unique. In conclusion, Change of Heart is a true-to-life story, which I love so much and would strongly recommend to all my fellow schoolmates.

African-Americans and the Civil Rights Movement essays

African-Americans and the Civil Rights Movement essays The Civil Rights Movement gave African-Americans many rights that would change their lives forever. Without the Civil Rights Movement, our world is significantly different today because African Americans would still be segregated from the white world. Before the 1950's African Americans held very few rights in the South. The Southern states made sure that whites and blacks were segregated. Blacks could not eat in the white diners or restaurants; they couldn't even use the same restrooms or drinking fountains as the whites. The blacks were almost treated like they weren't even humans. They were also segregated from the whites in education and had very few legal rights. Groups such as the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) worked to change the views of the white American. These activist groups played a major role in the advancement of African-Americans in education, public rights, and legal rights . "These groups paved the way for the African Americans road to freedom."(1) The African Americans first step to freedom was gaining the same educational rights that the white race had. Before 1954, The white people would not allow their children to go to school with African-Americans. Since the blacks could not go to the same schools as the whites, they were forced to start their schools which received very little funding and were poorly run. The Supreme Court changed education for African Americans forever on May 17, 1954, when it unanimously agreed that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The landmark case that changed African American education forever was known as Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. The supreme court believed that segregation was unconstitutional because it violated the 14th amendment. "The court believed that by having segregated schools solely based on the race of a person skin, it denied African Americ...
